Erdene zuu monastery

Overview

The first Buddhist monastery, Erdenezuu, was built on the ruins of Karakorum in 1586 by order of Abtai Sain Khan, a distant but powerful relative of Genghis Khaan. Stone monuments, bricks and many order building materials from the ruins of Karakorum were used in the construction of the monastery.

DESTINATIONS

Erdenezuu monastery
The first Buddhist monastery, Erdenezuu, was built on the ruins of Karakorum in 1586 by order of Abtai Sain Khan, a distant but powerful relative of Genghis Khaan. Stone monuments, bricks and many order building materials from the ruins of Karakorum were used in the construction of the monastery.
The monastery occupies an area of 1600 sq.meters, which is exactly 10 times smaller than the original city area and is surrounded by a stone wall with 108 stupas and four gates at all sites. The Erdenezuu monastery preserves works of the Mongolian artisans, painters, sculptors, embroiders and craftsmen of 17-19th century.

Karakorum-The ancient capital of Mongolia
The Symbolic ruins of Karakorum, the ancient capital city of Mongolia is one of the most popular travel destinations along with Erdenezuu monastery, the second largest Buddhist monastery in the country. Karakorum city was established in 1220 and served as the capital city of the Mongolia for 140 years. In 2005 the Government of Mongolia initiated the Karakorum Model city project with a view of moving the capital city of Mongolia from Ulaanbaatar back to Karakorum in the future.

Hustai Nuruu National Park
After two hours drive to the west from Ulaanbaatar, you will arrive at Hustain nuruu Natutal reserve. In this forest steppe zone, the takhi, or Przewalski horse, the last true wild horse in the world, is being reintroduced. The takhi disappeared from the Gobi desert in the 1960 and world was left with small capital breeding population of horses in European zoos. Now there are over 80 takhis including foals born in wild since their parents brought from zoos in the Netherlands and Switzerland were released in 1995. Perfect hiking, trekking and horse riding tours are arranged in Khustain Nuruu area, where there is a ger camp in the entrance of the large wired fence protecting the wild horses.

Itineraries

Day 01 Ulaanbaatar
Arrival to Ulaanbaatar and check in hotel.

Day 02 Mountain via Hustai Nuruu
Will pick up from the hotel. We will drive to /100 km/ via Khustai Nuruu National Park, where pastures Przewalsky wild horse, which brought from Holland in framework of international project, and explore local natural beauty. Lunch in the tourist camp. Then, will reach Khogno Khan mountain, where we’ll have a great opportunity to view and screen endless area from top of the mountain. It will give a wonderful feeling to explore the nature beauty. The landscape composition is quite exciting that mountain, grassland covered with beautiful flowers like - edelweiss, forest, rivers and sand dunes combined all-in-one and explore it by walking or horse riding, where we need to rent horses from local area. Dinner and overnight in tourist camp.

Day 03 Erdene Zuu monastery and Karakorum city

After breakfast, drive to Karakorum – capital city of Great Mongol Empire founded in times of Chinggis Khaan - 13th century. Meanwhile, we will visit the oldest Monastery – Erdene-Zuu, with 108 stupas and was built in 1586 and explore the daily meeting of monks – how they’re praying, reading the sutra. Then will drive back to Khogno Khan mountain. On the way will visit local horse breeding family to experience nomads way of life. Dinner and overnight in ger camp.

Day 04 Khogno Khan mountain

Whole day we will spend on exploration of local area, where we will explore local, small monastery Ovgon and take very interesting journey nearby Khogno Khan mountain by walking or horse riding. Lunch in tourist camp. Then, we will continue the journey by walking or climbing to the Khogno Khan mountain, where we have a good opportunity to view endless, vast area. Dinner and overnight in tourist camp.

Day 05 Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast, will drive back to Ulaanbaatar city. Lunch and transfer to hotel.

Day 06 Departure
After breakfast, will be transferred from hotel to train station or airport.
